Get To Know Sea Turtles

Category : Nature

Recently, American scientists tracked 9 leatherback turtles. This process of tracking lasted 695 days and was across the Pacific Ocean over 20,000 kilometers.

American Ocean and Atmosphere Administration (AOAA) was responsible for this project. Peter Dutton, a scientist from AOAA, said, “These turtles are a kind of marvelous animal. We haven’t yet learned much knowledge about them.” Sea turtles like leatherback turtle are the animals that are hard to track, because it is difficult to find them in oceans. And sea turtles can be said to lonely travelers. They often dive a few kilometers in ocean. There are few chances for them to float on water to breath. Scientists have always wanted to learn more about the lives of sea turtles. In the past, many scientists have send ships and aircraft to search the hiding places for sea turtles.

A scientist said, “Sea turtle is a kind of species that is hard to find.” Many scientists have even not seen them. In order to understand them, the scientists have successfully installed satellite transmitters on 9 leatherback turtles which are in the Pacific area. During the 695 days’ tracking, the 9 turtles traversed the Pacific Ocean from Papua New Guinea to Indonesia, Hawaii, and finally arrived at the seashore in Oregon. They stayed there to enjoy jellyfish’s meal. And then, they returned to Hawaii. That concludes the whole tracking. In the 695 days, the longest-swimming distance of these turtles is 20,570 kilometers. Sometimes, it can swim 56.4 kilometer a day. It is an amazing animal indeed.

Sea turtle is considered a threat to the creature in the Atlantic and Pacific coast of the United States. People in some tropical countries caught them when they came ashore to lay eggs, and some fishing boats mistakenly captured them. Therefore, the turtle’s number in Pacific area has decreased by 95%.

Nature Trail

Category : Nature

There was a year when my life was especially troubled, and I began to walk a nature trail each day. I walked many miles, for my health supposedly, but in reality I went to think out all the thoughts that troubled my head and to find a little peace. That path became healing to me.

For some reason I walked the same path every day. There were other paths and directions I could have taken, but I chose instead to always walk to one particular spot and back again, about six or seven miles. This path taught me more about nature than I had learned before in my whole life. I’m sure there are many naturalists who learn by traveling the world and seeing different environments, but for me it was for the very reason my path was always the same that I learned so much.

You see, no matter how inclement the weather, I walked. One day I was far away when a sudden, serious, storm rolled in and I looked up to see a funnel cloud above me. I took shelter in a ditch under an old train bridge but I still got soaked to the skin because the wind blew the rain under it in sheets. I also walked on beastly hot late summer days and in winter when I had to break a path through a foot of snow. I was stubborn and would go out every day and I started to like all weather. This is how I learned the subtleties of the changing seasons and the habits and cycles of the animals and plants.

That same path, day after day, monotonous at first: same trees, same plants. But then I started noting little changes. If I had not walked the same path, I don’t think I’d ever have noticed that when tree leaves fall face up the rain spreads on them, but when they fall face down, it beads. Or that the last week of May is when the first lightning bugs come out. In June I see the first green dragonflies. The thistle doesn’t bloom until late July. In September I can pick wild apples and listen to the Canada Geese honk as they fly overhead. I got better at spotting animals, too. I learned which times of day they come out, and where to look and how to be still. At first I saw the easy ones: a rabbit or two, sometimes a ground hog. But then I learned certain sunny days bring the hawks out to spiral on thermals high in the sky in wingless flight, and that the bluebirds like the edges between forest and meadow to build their nests, that in winter the rabbits always come out in the first hour of snow fall, and even where fox are likely to come out at the beginning of night.

3 Scariest Fish Outside of the Fish Tank

Category : Nature

To me there is nothing more horrifying or shudder-inducing than a mammoth, toothy fish circling around me as a go for a leisurely dip in the ocean. It’s a scene from one of my most terrible nightmares. The ocean’s dark depths hold some of the strangest, most frightening creatures in the world. These certainly aren’t the type of fish you would find in your everyday fish tank. Below are the top five most chilling, dreadful fish on the planet that I hope to never, ever encounter in my lifetime.

  1. Alligator gar. This fish looks like war missile equipped with ferocious teeth. This frightening leviathan can grow up to eight feet in length and weigh over 300 hundred pounds. It inhabits southern lakes and rivers and there have been numerous accounts of it injuring or killing humans.
  2. Giant Trahira. The size of this fish isn’t the frightening part. It typically weighs up to fifty pounds, but have a vicious bite. Its teeth are so strong they could bite through nails and you can only imagine what they could do to human bones. It usually inhabits jungle backwaters, so you aren’t likely to encounter, however it has been known to bite chunks out of unsuspecting fools wading around barefoot.
  3. Black Piranha. Most people have had a nightmare or two about being devoured by a school of hungry piranhas. This South American fish is equipped with piercing red eyes and a mouth full of razor sharp teeth. They’ve been known to take off toes and fingers in one swift, clean bite.

Tips for Water Damage Flood Restoration Volunteers

Category : Nature

Flooding presents a series of potential hazards. When people decide to volunteer to help in a Water Damage flood ravaged city they face the possibility of encountering several unpleasant and dangerous issues that are brought about by the flooding. The water purification and sewage systems in the affected area are likely to be disrupted, leaving no clean water to drink or a way to flush bodily waste. The flood water will contain filth from the sewage system. Flood waters will mix with toxins from overflowing toxic waste sites and with chemicals that were stored in barrels above ground. Volunteers helping to cleanup a flood ravaged area can be exposed to these problems resulting in serious illness or chemical poisoning. Volunteers should also be careful to avoid areas near downed electrical lines because these present a possible fire or electrocution hazard.

Anyone who works near or with flood waters should be aware that the water will contain bacteria such as shigella, E. coli, salmonella, hepatitis A virus, agents of typhoid, paratyphoid, and tetanus. Even though these sicknesses are caused by different pathogens they have similar symptoms when they take hold in a person’s body. Fever, muscle aches, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea are signs that you are coming down with one of these waterborne diseases. These diseases are brought on by eating contaminated food or drinking dirty water. Tetanus is an infectious disease that is gotten by exposure of contaminated flood water to an open cut or puncture wound. This can be quite serious or even fatal. For this reason it is imperative that anyone who volunteers to clean up after a flood has gotten a current tetanus vaccination.

Flood water is often contaminated with hazardous waste and pesticides or industrial chemicals. These can poison the volunteers that come into contact with the water polluted by thewater damage. Some of the symptoms of chemical poisoning include fatigue, weakness, headache, skin rashes dizziness, excitability, and nausea. Be especially aware of the possibility of getting chemical poisoning if you are doing clean up near an industrial site. Always wear protective clothing, rubber gloves, boots, goggles, and respirator when working around flood waters. Be even more vigilant about these precautions when working near an industrial site.

Remember that standing water will breed insects, especially mosquitoes. Mosquitoes raise the risk of infecting people with West Nile, encephalitis, or malaria. Stay away from wild animals and snakes as best as you can to avoid being bitten. If any of these things do happen seek medical help immediately.

There are some things you can do to lessen the risk being infected with these unwanted problems. Wash hands with soap and clean water often. Don’t drink any water that isn’t bottled or disinfected. Do not eat any food that has been in contact with the polluted water. Be sure you have a current tetanus shot. Wear protective clothing and insect repellent. Be especially careful to avoid contamination from chemical if you are anywhere near an industrial site or hazardous waste dump site.
