Tips for Water Damage Flood Restoration Volunteers

Category : Nature

Flooding presents a series of potential hazards. When people decide to volunteer to help in a Water Damage flood ravaged city they face the possibility of encountering several unpleasant and dangerous issues that are brought about by the flooding. The water purification and sewage systems in the affected area are likely to be disrupted, leaving no clean water to drink or a way to flush bodily waste. The flood water will contain filth from the sewage system. Flood waters will mix with toxins from overflowing toxic waste sites and with chemicals that were stored in barrels above ground. Volunteers helping to cleanup a flood ravaged area can be exposed to these problems resulting in serious illness or chemical poisoning. Volunteers should also be careful to avoid areas near downed electrical lines because these present a possible fire or electrocution hazard.

Anyone who works near or with flood waters should be aware that the water will contain bacteria such as shigella, E. coli, salmonella, hepatitis A virus, agents of typhoid, paratyphoid, and tetanus. Even though these sicknesses are caused by different pathogens they have similar symptoms when they take hold in a person’s body. Fever, muscle aches, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea are signs that you are coming down with one of these waterborne diseases. These diseases are brought on by eating contaminated food or drinking dirty water. Tetanus is an infectious disease that is gotten by exposure of contaminated flood water to an open cut or puncture wound. This can be quite serious or even fatal. For this reason it is imperative that anyone who volunteers to clean up after a flood has gotten a current tetanus vaccination.

Flood water is often contaminated with hazardous waste and pesticides or industrial chemicals. These can poison the volunteers that come into contact with the water polluted by thewater damage. Some of the symptoms of chemical poisoning include fatigue, weakness, headache, skin rashes dizziness, excitability, and nausea. Be especially aware of the possibility of getting chemical poisoning if you are doing clean up near an industrial site. Always wear protective clothing, rubber gloves, boots, goggles, and respirator when working around flood waters. Be even more vigilant about these precautions when working near an industrial site.

Remember that standing water will breed insects, especially mosquitoes. Mosquitoes raise the risk of infecting people with West Nile, encephalitis, or malaria. Stay away from wild animals and snakes as best as you can to avoid being bitten. If any of these things do happen seek medical help immediately.

There are some things you can do to lessen the risk being infected with these unwanted problems. Wash hands with soap and clean water often. Don’t drink any water that isn’t bottled or disinfected. Do not eat any food that has been in contact with the polluted water. Be sure you have a current tetanus shot. Wear protective clothing and insect repellent. Be especially careful to avoid contamination from chemical if you are anywhere near an industrial site or hazardous waste dump site.

Global Crisis For The Big Guys

Category : Politics

Did the global crisis in the world financial markets come as a shock?  Some believe it was something Wall Street and the White House could see coming.  There is plenty of evidence out there to indicate it was all a perfect money making
scheme for the guys at the top of the economy, leaving you and me to get the short end of the stick.

In 1993, the Federal Housing Enterprises Financial Safety and Housing Act entered into effect in the United States.  This Act mandates that two government sponsored enterprises (known as GSE’s in Washington-speak), would increase housing mortgage loans to poor people in under-served areas.  Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, the two mortgage monsters at the eye of the sub-prime firestorm in 2009, are the GSE’s in question.

Well, in 2003, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) commissioned a report.  The report was entitled “An Analysis of the Effects of the GSE Affordable Goals on Low- and Moderate-Income Families.”  The report found these sub-prime loans were effective in making housing affordable for minorities and the poor.

In other words, in 1993, the federal government began encouraging these private but “federally sponsored” firms to give out these loans. They were issued, at low interest rates, to the poor.

Ten years later, in 2003, despite problems and concerns, a HUD study found everything to be hunky dory.  It’s worth mentioning that the same Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae making the mortgages helped fund this study.

Growing mortgages and construction looked like a big boom in housing.  To make the risk less to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, who actually lent money from the big banks, insured the loans.  This insurance on these loans, through AIG, were turned into securities.

These financial products, known as derivatives, (which are basically unregulated by any government entity), were sold far and wide around the world.  That’s where the set up for the global crisis comes in.

Once interest rates were raised on these loans, people that had the mortgages just couldn’t afford them.  When default kicked in the insurer couldn’t come up with all the money and that’s when it all started to hit the proverbial fan.

The big executives at these companies didn’t care.  Why would they?  They already had millions in their own bank accounts.  Furthermore, they were so intertwined with the global banking system the government wouldn’t let them sink.  You have to keep in mind that it’s the big banksters that own U.S. currency, control monetary policy and pick politicians for powerful posts.  We the voters are only served the choices from a limited menu, from which no substitutions are accepted on Election Day.

Lo and behold — the latest bank bailout was born.  While Bush Jr. made the first installment, President Obama was quick to follow up with continued no-strings-attached payments.  Why wouldn’t he?  Banks and securities are his biggest corporate campaign contributors!.  If you don’t believe me just take a look at the Federal Elections Commission data. It’s neatly organized by the Center for Responsive Politics at opensecrets.org.

So if the politicians are paid for by the big banksters and other corporate goons of greed, why not bet on a losing horse if the odds are tipped in your favor always?  Paid for politicians were in on the scam from the start.

Any way you cut it, it’s working people paying the price.  Be it through foreclosures or increased debt to pay the banks for the global crisis they provoked, it’s all part of the American trickle up economics system.  Too bad we’re in the basement at the bottom.

Lipstick Pepper Spray Effects

Category : Women's Issue

Sometimes street thugs and punks are not the smartest people around, and it might sound like a scene from a movie, but can you picture a thug attempting to demand a wallet from a little old lady, and she first says “Excuse me, Sir, but if you are going to rob me, I first need to put on my lipstick.” Then the lady can pull out her lipstick pepper spray, and spray the creep right in the face.

Even if this scenario never has the opportunity to play out in real life, it is a funny thought, but what is not funny is the fact that many little muggings and purse snatchings happen all of the time, and no woman between the ages of 18 and 98 should be without a lipstick pepper spray or some other variety of pepper spray. For those who would like the convenience, they make these small pepper sprays that look just like a woman’s lipstick. The lipstick pepper spray can fit comfortably in the pocket or purse, and it is ready if it is ever needed.

They will shoot a stream about six feet, and when the attacker gets that hot spray in the face, his eyes will immediately close, he will start coughing and choking, will have trouble breathing, and will not be able to do anything for at least twenty minutes, while our dear  friend is able to escape to safety!

Sadly, we now live in a world where anything can happen at any time, and why not be prepared, just in case? Perhaps the time has come, for you to buy some pepper sprays for you and your family members. Even these smaller lipstick pepper sprays can pack a wallop, as they usually contain a half dozen one second bursts. Plus, the modern day formula of pepper spray will not cause and long term damage or harm to the assailant, but it sure will ruin his day!
